Werder Bremen’s 2001/02 season was another step in the development of the side Thomas Schaaf was building. Bremen finished sixth in the Bundesliga with 56 points, winning 17 of their 34 league matches and scoring 54 goals. The result secured qualification for the following season’s UEFA Cup.
The principal attacking figure was Aílton. Wearing No.32, the Brazilian scored 16 Bundesliga goals in 33 appearances, placing him joint-fifth in the league’s goalscoring standings. He also contributed five assists, giving him 21 direct goal contributions in league play.
Torsten Frings was another central figure. The No.22 midfielder started 33 Bundesliga matches and contributed six goals and five assists. His combination of energy, versatility and technical quality made him one of the most important players in Schaaf’s team during what proved to be his final season before leaving Bremen that summer.
Club veteran Marco Bode remained an important attacking presence, scoring seven league goals while wearing No.17. Frank Baumann appeared in all 34 Bundesliga matches, while Viktor Skripnik, Frank Verlaat and Mladen Krstajić were important members of the defensive group.
The season also featured several players who would later become central to Bremen’s success. Tim Borowski, wearing No.24, made 26 Bundesliga appearances, while Ivan Klasnić wore No.7 during his first season with the club. Both would eventually become major members of the Bremen side that won the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double in 2003/04.
An important historical correction for this particular season is that Claudio Pizarro was no longer a Werder Bremen player in 2001/02. Bremen’s own pre-season squad announcement records his departure to Bayern Munich before the campaign began, so PIZARRO should not be used as a player-printing option for this shirt.
