The 1994/95 season represents the high point of Blackburn Rovers’ Premier League era. Managed by Kenny Dalglish, Blackburn finished first in the Premier League with 89 points from 42 matches, recording 27 wins, eight draws and seven defeats. They scored a league-high 80 goals and finished just one point ahead of Manchester United to become champions.
The title was Blackburn’s first English top-flight championship in 81 years. The race went all the way to the final day: Blackburn lost 2–1 at Liverpool, but Manchester United’s draw with West Ham meant Rovers still finished top of the table.
At the heart of the championship side was the famous attacking partnership of Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton. Shearer scored 34 Premier League goals, winning the Golden Boot, while Sutton added 15 league goals. Together, the pair produced 49 league goals, becoming one of the defining strike partnerships of the 1990s. Shearer also finished the campaign with 37 goals in all competitions.
The championship was built on much more than the two forwards. Tim Sherwood captained the team from midfield, Colin Hendry was an imposing presence in central defence, while Graeme Le Saux, Henning Berg and Stuart Ripley were among the other major contributors. Berg played 40 Premier League matches and Le Saux 39 during the title-winning campaign.
Blackburn also competed in Europe during 1994/95, making their first appearance in the UEFA Cup, although they were eliminated by Swedish side Trelleborg in the first round, 3–2 on aggregate. Domestically, Blackburn reached the third round of the FA Cup and fourth round of the League Cup, while their overriding achievement was securing the Premier League championship.
