    The 1978-81 period sits at the heart of Bobby Robson’s golden era at Ipswich Town. The club entered this period as reigning FA Cup holders after defeating Arsenal 1–0 at Wembley in May 1978, with several members of that winning team—including Mick Mills, John Wark and Paul Mariner—remaining central figures in the seasons that followed.

    Ipswich finished sixth in the First Division in 1978/79, then improved to third in 1979/80. Paul Mariner was the club’s leading scorer in both campaigns, while the team developed into one of England’s strongest sides.

    The high point came in 1980/81. Ipswich challenged for the First Division title, eventually finishing runners-up, reached the FA Cup semi-finals and produced a remarkable run to win the UEFA Cup. Bobby Robson’s side eliminated Aris Thessaloniki, Bohemians Prague, Widzew Łódź, Saint-Étienne and Köln before facing AZ Alkmaar in the final.

    Ipswich won the first leg of the final 3–0 at Portman Road, with goals from John Wark, Frans Thijssen and Paul Mariner. Despite losing the return leg 4–2 in Amsterdam, Ipswich secured the trophy 5–4 on aggregate, giving the club its first major European title.

    John Wark was the outstanding individual figure of that European campaign, scoring an exceptional 14 UEFA Cup goals. His performances also earned him the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award during the 1980/81 season.
