The 1991/92 season represented the beginning of a completely new chapter for Napoli. Following Maradona’s departure, the club placed greater responsibility on Gianfranco Zola, who had previously developed alongside the Argentine and was increasingly viewed as the creative centre of the team. Claudio Ranieri took charge, while Laurent Blanc joined an established core containing Careca, Ciro Ferrara, Massimo Crippa and Fernando De Napoli.

Despite the enormous transition, Napoli produced an impressive league campaign. They finished fourth in Serie A with 42 points, recording 15 wins, 12 draws and seven defeats and earning qualification for the following season’s UEFA Cup.

Careca remained the team's leading attacking force, scoring 15 Serie A goals in 33 appearances. Zola played all 34 league matches and contributed 12 goals, demonstrating that he was ready to assume a much greater role following Maradona's departure. Defender Laurent Blanc also had an unusually productive campaign, scoring six league goals.

The same home design continued into 1992/93, but the squad changed significantly. Daniel Fonseca arrived and joined Zola and Careca in an extremely talented attacking group. Period shirt documentation specifically records the 1992/93 home shirt with FONSECA 11, while contemporary records show CARECA 9 and ZOLA 10 on shirts from the same season.

One of the extraordinary individual performances of the period came in the UEFA Cup first round against Valencia. Napoli travelled to Spain on 16 September 1992 and won 5–1, with Fonseca scoring all five goals. Napoli then won the return leg 1–0, again through Fonseca, completing a 6–1 aggregate victory.

The domestic campaign was considerably more difficult than 1991/92, but this two-season shirt remains historically interesting because it captures the precise transition between two generations of Napoli: the established Careca–Ferrara core, the emergence of Zola as the new No.10, and the arrival of Fonseca.
