The Scotland 1978 Home Retro Football Shirt recreates one of the most recognisable shirts in Scottish football history, worn by the national team at the 1978 FIFA World Cup in Argentina.

Scotland travelled to the 1978 FIFA World Cup in Argentina with considerable expectations. Ally MacLeod's squad contained players from many of Britain’s leading clubs, including Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness, Joe Jordan, Archie Gemmill and Bruce Rioch.

The campaign, however, began badly. Scotland faced Peru in Córdoba in their opening match and were beaten 3–1. FIFA records Peru’s Teófilo Cubillas producing two of the defining goals of that game as the South American side came from behind to take the victory.

Scotland then faced Iran, where another disappointing result followed. The match finished 1–1, with Iran recording the first World Cup point in its history. Those dropped points against Peru and Iran left Scotland requiring an extraordinary result from their final group match.

That final opponent was the Netherlands, the 1974 World Cup runners-up and one of the strongest national teams of the era. Scotland needed not merely to win but effectively to do so by a sufficiently large margin to overhaul the Dutch on goal difference.

What followed became one of the most famous matches in Scottish football history.

Kenny Dalglish scored to bring Scotland level before Archie Gemmill converted a penalty to put Scotland 2–1 ahead. Then, in the 68th minute, Gemmill produced the moment for which this 1978 shirt is remembered above all others.

Gemmill collected possession on the right side of the Dutch penalty area, worked his way past several defenders and delicately lifted the ball over goalkeeper Jan Jongbloed. FIFA continues to celebrate the strike among the memorable goals in World Cup history.

Scotland were suddenly 3–1 ahead, tantalisingly close to the margin required to progress. Johnny Rep subsequently scored for the Netherlands, however, making the final score Scotland 3–2 Netherlands.

Despite defeating the eventual World Cup finalists, Scotland were eliminated at the group stage because of the points dropped against Peru and Iran. FIFA describes Gemmill’s goal and the victory it inspired as one of Scotland’s greatest World Cup moments, albeit one accompanied by the disappointment of elimination.

The shirt therefore represents one of the great bittersweet chapters in Scotland’s international history: a disappointing tournament overall, but also one of the national team’s most celebrated individual matches and arguably its most famous World Cup goal.

Historical printing note: Scotland’s 1978 shirts did not feature modern player surnames on the back. The World Cup used tournament squad numbers, so for the most authentic 1978 appearance, the appropriate presentation is the player’s number only.

GEMMILL 10 is the most directly connected printing to the story of the Scotland 1978 Home Retro Football Shirt.

Archie Gemmill scored twice in the 3–2 victory over the Netherlands, but it is his second goal that transformed the shirt into an enduring piece of World Cup imagery. FIFA still highlights the 68th-minute solo effort as one of the memorable goals of the tournament and one of Scotland’s defining World Cup moments.

For a broader Scottish-football icon, DALGLISH 8 is an equally important option. Dalglish scored against the Netherlands and ultimately made eight World Cup appearances for Scotland across his career, a total surpassed among Scottish players only later by goalkeeper Jim Leighton.

For the most period-accurate reproduction, however, choose simply 10 or 8 on the back rather than adding GEMMILL or DALGLISH, as player surnames were not part of Scotland’s 1978 match-shirt printing.
