The 1997/98 season marked the end of Walter Smith’s first spell as Rangers manager and followed the club’s historic run of nine consecutive Scottish league championships. Rangers attempted to make it ten in a row but ultimately finished second in the Scottish Premier Division, while also finishing runners-up in the Scottish Cup. In Europe, Rangers were eliminated during UEFA Champions League qualifying before entering the UEFA Cup.

That season is particularly memorable for Marco Negri’s extraordinary goalscoring run. The Italian forward scored 37 goals in all competitions, despite his season being disrupted during the second half of the campaign. Rangers’ squad also contained several major figures from the nine-in-a-row era: Brian Laudrup made 36 appearances, Ally McCoist scored 16 goals in 26 appearances, Jörg Albertz contributed 15 goals, while Gascoigne, Gough and Goram were still part of the team.

The following 1998/99 season transformed the historical meaning of the same shirt. Dick Advocaat replaced Smith and oversaw a major reconstruction of the squad. Rangers responded by winning the Scottish Premier League, Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup, completing the club’s first domestic treble since 1992/93. They finished six points ahead of Celtic in the league, defeated St Johnstone 2–1 in the League Cup Final, and beat Celtic 1–0 in the Scottish Cup Final.

Rod Wallace became the leading scorer of the treble-winning side with 27 goals in all competitions, including 19 in the league. The squad also featured Jörg Albertz, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Andrei Kanchelskis, Neil McCann, Barry Ferguson, Lorenzo Amoruso and Sergio Porrini. Rangers additionally reached the third round of the UEFA Cup before being eliminated by Parma.

That contrast gives the 1997-99 home shirt unusual historical depth: it was worn during the difficult conclusion of the nine-in-a-row generation and then retained for the immediate return to dominance under Advocaat.
