CALLUM WILSON #9 — 2021/22 NEWCASTLE SURVIVAL & TURNAROUND
Callum Wilson wore the No.9 shirt for Newcastle United during the dramatic 2021/22 season, carrying one of the club’s most famous squad numbers as the Magpies entered a period of enormous change. After scoring 12 Premier League goals in his debut Newcastle campaign, Wilson remained the side’s principal centre-forward and attacking focal point at the beginning of the season.
Newcastle endured a difficult opening to the campaign and found themselves firmly involved in the relegation battle. Steve Bruce departed in October, with Eddie Howe appointed head coach in November while the club sat 19th in the Premier League. The second half of the season brought a remarkable transformation, with Howe ultimately guiding Newcastle to an 11th-place finish on 49 points.
Wilson’s own campaign was heavily disrupted by a calf injury. Despite being limited to just 18 Premier League appearances, he remained Newcastle’s leading league scorer with eight goals. His importance when available was clear: Premier League analysis noted that he was involved in 50% of Newcastle’s goals while selected.
