The jersey has a distinct grey base colour with a fine, vertical pinstripe pattern throughout. Across the chest is a wide black band that is intersected by two thinner white stripes. Above the chest band on the right is the Adidas logo in white, and on the left chest, there is the club's crest.

The collar is a v-neck style, edged with black and white stripes giving it a smart, contrasting look. There's also a small amount of detailing where the collar meets the chest with a black and white edge, adding a subtle accent. Overall, the design carries a retro aesthetic, reflective of football jersey styles from the 90s.

After a disappointing second-place finish behind Manchester United and losing a 12-point lead, Newcastle signed Alan Shearer in 1996, who would become their top scorer. Shearer's debut was a 4-0 defeat to Manchester United. The club began the next season strongly, including a 5-0 win against Manchester United, but then struggled, leading to manager Kevin Keegan's resignation in January 1997. Kenny Dalglish replaced him, and despite inconsistencies, Newcastle finished second, securing a Champions League spot. In cup competitions, they were eliminated early in both the League and FA Cups but reached the UEFA Cup quarter-finals, where they were defeated by Monaco.
