The Liverpool 1994-96 Third Retro Football Shirt recreates one of the club’s most distinctive designs of the mid-1990s. Used across both the 1994/95 and 1995/96 seasons, the shirt stands apart from Liverpool’s traditional red identity through its striking yellow and black colour scheme. The shirt spans two seasons. In 1994/95, Roy Evans guided Liverpool to fourth place in the Premier League and, most importantly, delivered the Football League Cup. Liverpool defeated Bolton Wanderers 2–1 at Wembley on 2 April 1995, with Steve McManaman scoring both goals. It was Liverpool’s fifth League Cup triumph and Evans’ first major trophy as manager.
That season also established Robbie Fowler as one of England’s outstanding young forwards. He played all 42 Premier League matches and scored 25 league goals, while Steve McManaman appeared in 40 league matches and contributed seven goals. The squad still contained Liverpool legends Ian Rush and John Barnes, creating a distinctive mixture of established experience and emerging talent.
Liverpool improved to third in the Premier League in 1995/96 and reached the FA Cup Final, while also competing in the UEFA Cup. Fowler's rise continued spectacularly: he scored 28 Premier League goals and 36 in all competitions, making him comfortably Liverpool’s leading scorer for the campaign.
The second season also introduced Stan Collymore to the attack, while Fowler, McManaman, Jamie Redknapp and Jason McAteer became increasingly prominent members of Evans’ side. Captain Ian Rush was approaching the end of his remarkable Liverpool career, making 1995/96 his final season at Anfield. Liverpool’s registered squad numbers included Fowler 23, Rush 9, McManaman 17, Barnes 10, Redknapp 15 and Collymore 8.
The shirt therefore represents more than an unusual alternative colourway. It belongs to the period in which Fowler and McManaman became leading Liverpool players, while Rush and Barnes represented the remaining connection to the club’s previous generation.
