The 2011/12 season marked Aston Villa’s 20th campaign in the Premier League and their 24th consecutive season in the English top flight. Alex McLeish took charge following Gérard Houllier’s departure, inheriting a squad that had undergone significant changes during the summer.
Villa began the league season reasonably steadily, losing only one of their opening eight Premier League fixtures. Early victories included a 3–1 home win over Blackburn Rovers and a 2–0 victory against Wigan Athletic, but too many draws prevented the team from establishing itself in the upper half of the table.
Results became increasingly difficult as the campaign progressed. Villa eventually finished 16th with 38 points, recording seven victories and 17 draws from 38 matches. They finished three points above Bolton Wanderers in 18th place and one point above Queens Park Rangers in 17th. The Premier League records Darren Bent as Villa's leading league scorer with nine goals, while Stephen Warnock made the most league appearances with 35.
Bent was also Villa’s leading scorer across all competitions with 10 goals, despite a serious ankle injury in February ending his season prematurely. Gabriel Agbonlahor was next with six goals in all competitions, while captain Stiliyan Petrov contributed four from midfield.
There was also a brief but memorable spell for Robbie Keane, who returned to English football on loan during the MLS off-season. He scored three Premier League goals, including two against Wolverhampton Wanderers in a 3–2 victory at Molineux.
Villa’s domestic cup campaigns were relatively short. They defeated Hereford United before being eliminated by Bolton Wanderers in the third round of the Football League Cup. In the FA Cup, Villa defeated Bristol Rovers 3–1 before travelling to Arsenal in the fourth round. Villa led 2–0 at half-time at the Emirates but eventually lost 3–2.
The campaign also has considerable significance because it was the final full season of Stiliyan Petrov’s playing career. The Villa captain was diagnosed with acute leukaemia shortly after becoming unwell following the March 2012 match against Arsenal. His importance to Aston Villa went far beyond the results of the season, and his No.19 shirt therefore carries particular emotional significance when associated with this jersey.
