Argentina arrived at Italia ’90 as defending world champions under Carlos Bilardo. Their tournament began badly with a famous 1–0 defeat to Cameroon, but they recovered to advance from the group before defeating Brazil 1–0 in the Round of 16. Argentina ultimately reached the final, where West Germany won 1–0 through Andreas Brehme’s late penalty.

The defining goalkeeper story began during Argentina’s second group match against the Soviet Union. Starting goalkeeper Nery Pumpido suffered a broken leg, forcing reserve goalkeeper Sergio Goycochea into the team. Pumpido was subsequently replaced in the tournament squad by Ángel Comizzo, but Goycochea remained Argentina’s starter for the rest of the World Cup.

Goycochea became one of the heroes of the tournament. Argentina drew 0–0 with Yugoslavia in the quarter-final before winning the penalty shootout 3–2. They then drew 1–1 with hosts Italy in the semi-final, winning another shootout 4–3 to reach the final.
