    This black concept jersey is based on the distinctive Liverpool design associated with the 1996-98 period, rather than a regular first-team match colourway. The two seasons capture the final phase of Roy Evans’ attacking Liverpool side and the transition from the established partnership of Robbie Fowler and Stan Collymore to the emergence of teenage sensation Michael Owen.

    In 1996/97, Liverpool finished fourth in the Premier League and mounted a strong European campaign in the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, reaching the semi-finals before being eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain. Robbie Fowler was the outstanding goalscorer, finishing the campaign with 31 goals in all competitions, while Steve McManaman, Jamie Redknapp, Stan Collymore and new arrival Patrik Berger were other major figures in the side.

    The 1997/98 season marked the breakthrough of Michael Owen. Still only 18, Owen scored 18 Premier League goals and 23 in all competitions, becoming Liverpool’s leading scorer. Liverpool improved to third in the Premier League, reached the League Cup semi-finals and competed in the UEFA Cup.

    The 1996-98 period therefore connects two generations particularly well: Fowler, McManaman and Redknapp remained established stars, while Owen and Jamie Carragher were beginning careers that would make them major Liverpool figures. Contemporary squad records confirm Fowler wore No.9, McManaman No.7, Redknapp No.11, Berger No.15 and Carragher No.23 across the period, while Owen wore No.18.

    FOWLER 9 is the strongest recommendation for the Liverpool 1996-98 Black Concept Jersey.

    Unlike COLLYMORE 8, who represents primarily 1996/97, or OWEN 18, whose major breakthrough came in 1997/98, Fowler provides a direct connection across the full 1996-98 period. His 31-goal 1996/97 campaign was particularly outstanding, including goals throughout Liverpool’s run to the Cup Winners’ Cup semi-finals.

    For something more distinctive, OWEN 18 would be the strongest alternative—the No.18 is especially evocative of the teenage Owen breakthrough period before his later association with No.10.
