The team progressed from an exceptionally difficult group containing Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Brøndby before overcoming Inter Milan in the quarter-finals and Juventus in the semi-finals.
The semi-final second leg in Turin became one of the defining performances of the season. After falling 2–0 behind to Juventus, United recovered to win 3–2, progressing 4–3 on aggregate. Captain Roy Keane played a crucial role in the comeback, while Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole completed the scoring.
The Champions League Final took place at Camp Nou on 26 May 1999, with Bayern Munich leading 1–0 from the sixth minute and remaining ahead as the match entered stoppage time. Teddy Sheringham equalised before Ole Gunnar Solskjær scored the winner moments later, completing a remarkable 2–1 victory.
That victory completed the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League Treble, establishing the 1998/99 team as one of the most celebrated sides in Manchester United history.
