    France hosted the 1998 FIFA World Cup under head coach Aimé Jacquet and entered the tournament seeking their first world championship. Les Bleus won all three group matches before defeating Paraguay in extra time in the Round of 16, overcoming Italy on penalties in the quarter-final and beating Croatia 2–1 in the semi-final.

    The semi-final produced one of the tournament’s defining individual performances. With France trailing Croatia, Lilian Thuram scored both goals in the 2–1 comeback victory, sending the hosts into their first World Cup Final.

    On 12 July 1998, France faced defending champions Brazil at the Stade de France. Zinédine Zidane scored two first-half headers, before Emmanuel Petit completed a famous 3–0 victory in stoppage time. France were world champions for the first time.

    Captain Didier Deschamps lifted the trophy, while the tournament established Zidane as one of world football’s defining players. France’s squad also contained an exceptional defensive generation including Thuram, Desailly, Blanc and Lizarazu, alongside emerging young forwards Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet.
