    FC Groningen finished the 2007/08 Eredivisie season in seventh place with 51 points, continuing a strong period for the northern Dutch club under manager Ron Jans.

    The season also featured a memorable UEFA Cup campaign. Groningen were drawn against Italian side Fiorentina in the first round and produced two highly competitive performances. The first leg in Groningen finished 1–1, with Goran Lovre scoring for the home side. The return match in Florence also finished 1–1 after extra time, Erik Nevland putting Groningen ahead before Fiorentina equalised. The tie eventually ended 2–2 on aggregate, with Groningen eliminated 4–3 on penalties.

    The squad was also notable for the emergence of Marcus Berg. The Swedish striker arrived during the summer of 2007 and quickly established himself as one of Groningen’s most important attacking players. Alongside Berg, Norwegian striker Erik Nevland remained a major figure during the first half of the campaign before leaving in January 2008.
