    Borussia Mönchengladbach began the 1998/99 Bundesliga campaign under Friedel Rausch, before former club legend Rainer Bonhof took charge in November 1998. The season started impressively with a 3–0 home victory over Schalke 04, but results subsequently deteriorated.

    Gladbach ultimately finished 18th in the Bundesliga with 21 points, recording four wins, nine draws and 21 defeats. The result brought relegation and ended the club’s long continuous stay in the Bundesliga.

    The brightest attacking figure was Toni Polster. The experienced Austrian striker scored 11 Bundesliga goals, comfortably making him Gladbach’s leading league scorer. Swedish forward Jörgen Pettersson added six goals, while Karlheinz Pflipsen remained an important presence in midfield.

    There was greater success in the DFB-Pokal, where Gladbach won three matches and reached the quarter-finals. The squad also included future Sweden captain Patrik Andersson and a young Robert Enke, who remarkably played all 32 of his recorded Bundesliga appearances that season and accumulated 2,880 league minutes.
